About this tour
Fayoum is the easiest escape from Cairo and, surprisingly, one of the least known destinations. Just ninety minutes southwest of the city, this natural depression, fed by a canal from the Nile, has created a fascinating mix of lakes, farmland, and dunes.
We take a 4x4 into Wadi al-Rayan, where two lakes are connected by Egypt's only waterfalls. Next, we head up to the dunes above Magic Lake, named for the way its colors shift as the light changes. Here, we can try sandboarding, which is easier and more forgiving than snowboarding if you happen to fall.
For lunch, we set up beside the water. Afterward, we visit Tunis Village, a small town near Lake Qarun that has transformed into a pottery center. You can watch a wheel being thrown and, if you’re interested, even give it a try yourself.
If prehistoric sites appeal to you more than sand dunes, we can swap the afternoon itinerary for Wadi al-Hitan, also known as the Valley of the Whales. This UNESCO site features fossilized whales with hind legs lying exposed in the open desert. Please let us know which option you prefer.

Questions about this tour
In one day it is a stretch — Wadi al-Hitan is a further hour of desert driving each way and deserves unhurried time on the fossil trail. We would rather do one properly. If you want both, stay overnight in Tunis Village and we will spread it across two half days.
No. Most people are standing up within a few runs, and sand is a soft landing. Children take to it faster than adults, generally.
For the dunes and the off-road sections, yes — an ordinary car cannot do it and gets stuck trying. That is included.
